Catalyst - For productive services

Catalyst was set up in July 2011 to assist functional areas of the Waikato District Health Board to become more efficient and effective and to eliminate waste through process change.

The Catalyst strategy is effectively a capacity building strategy of:

Challenge > Empower > Assist > Remove obstacles to progress

This isn’t a quick fix, but should deliver long-term sustainable savings.

Key Message from the CEO and Oversight Group:

"Demands for healthcare are increasing and if we do nothing our costs will exceed our revenue."

"As we need to live within our means we do need to take action to identify and reduce waste and variation as this will reduce our cost growth."

"Catalyst is empowered to enable this for the DHB."

What is the Catalyst approach?

The most common approach is to hold a workshop with a cross section of people to:

Define (map) current state
Identify issues and opportunities
Define future state - format differs
Create action plan
Assist the area execute the action plan

It is not a case of one size fits all and workshop facilitation needs to be flexible on the day.
