Lean methodologies eliminate waste and lend themselves to protecting volume delivery at a lower overall cost, says Waikato DHB chief financial officer Maureen Chrystall.

Mrs Chrystall presented a report to the Board on the DHB's approach to delivering savings by minimising waste and variation.

She outlined three key points:

  • outlined the approach to be taken
  • outlined the methodology using Lean principles
  • set out the governance structure to ensure the programme delivers on its stated aim.

Mrs Chrystall said she was committed to the project and knows it would work given her own experience when she worked in a Toyota company several years ago.

"There are no silver bullets and this will not be easy," she said.

"There will be difficult decisions. The process needs to be clear and fair."

Read Mrs Chrystall's report and read her blog in Our Korero.
