Waikato Hospital celebrating 125 years

The Village on the Hill

On 1 December 2011, Waikato Hospital celebrated its 125th anniversary.

Waikato Hospital started as a small kauri farm cottage overlooking Lake Rotoroa in Hamilton.

Today it stands as a sprawling campus undergoing a $430 million building programme – the biggest redevelopment in its history.

We have printed 8000 copies - nearly 7000 going to staff, board, some former employees e.g.: CEOs, chief nurses etc, libraries MPs etc. Before we make them available for public sale at $10 we would like to get all those distributed. To register your interest to purchase a copy email maryanne.gill@waikatodhb.health.nz

Activities to mark the 125th anniversary of the hospital include:

  • a limited-edition "coffee table" book, The Village on the Hill: Celebrating 125 Years of Waikato Hospital. The book was a collaboration between three Waikato institutions: the Waikato District Health Board, Wintec (Waikato Institute of Technology) and Hamilton-based printing company Print House.

Among the book's contributors were Wintec students in journalism, photography, moving image and graphic design, plus Waikato DHB photographers, designers and communication staff, and contracted writers.

  • profiles of a wide range of staff currently working at the hospital, each talking about their job and a ‘typical day’ for them, produced as feature articles and video interviews

  • the publishing for the first time of historical photos from the 2004 operation to separate conjoined twins

  • a "day in the life"  DVD by Wintec students, capturing activities and people on the current campus

  • Staff profiles and interviews
