Thames Hauraki Parents Centre

Parents Centre is a nationwide voluntary organisation that provides quality services to parents, such as childbirth and parenting education, support and advocacy, among other services. The centre also has a library service and discounted baby products.

La Leche League

Pregnant women and mothers can attend monthly informal support meetings. Discussions include the benefits of breastfeeding, getting breastfeeding off to a good start, avoiding difficulties and starting solids. Accredited leaders are also available by phone for information and support or home visits if needed. Contact leaders for advice on meeting location, dates and times.

Thames Women’s Resource Centre

For the health, wellbeing and support of the women and children of our community. The centre’s services include clothing cottage (free clothing); charity shop; library resources; information resources; breastfeeding and child changing spaces; bathroom/laundry facilities; kitchen facilities; counselling and support services including Young Mothers Group and self esteem; co dependency; addiction/substance abuse; sexual issues; health and nutrition courses.

Young Mothers Group

This is a support group for young or teen mums, or pregnant youth. This is a great opportunity for learning, socialising, and to meet others and to share experiences, skills and knowledge.

Breastfeeding clinic

Held at Thames Maternity Unit, run by a lactation consultant for women with breastfeeding problems. Referral from midwife/health care provider is required.

Well Child/Tamariki Ora providers

Well Child/ Tamariki Ora is a schedule that helps keep track of the health promotion, education, clinical assessment and whānau/family support for your child from birth to five years.

Public Health Nurses (Well Child provider)

This service provides support to families/whanau, commencing at discharge from midwifery services on or about six weeks of age to five years. This free service for babies, toddlers, preschoolers includes home or clinic visits with public health nurses in Coromandel, Collville, Whitianga, Tairua, and Pauanui.

CAPS Hauraki

CAPS Hauraki is a community agency based in Thames and Paeroa and servicing the wider Hauraki area. We have a focus on working in partnership with families to find solutions and/or strategies to prevent child abuse.

CAPS Hauraki believes that the well-being of the child is linked to the well-being of the family. We work to enhance the environment of the child by offering support to the family as a whole.

CAPS Hauraki is a free service.

Parents as First Teachers (PAFT)

How does PAFT work?

Trained educators will provide:
  • regular visits to share information, practical ideas, and guidance as your child grows and develops
  • continual checking of your child’s growth and development, including vision and hearing
  • group meetings where further information is presented about child development and you will have opportunities to share your experiences and concerns with other parents.
  • PAFT can help you to:
    • understand how your child grows and develops
    • know how to encourage your child’s growth and development
    • gain confidence in your parenting skills
    • get the support and professional assistance you need for your child’s health and development.
PAFT is an exciting opportunity to give your child the best possible start in life. PAFT is a free service. If you child is under 4 months, please contact CAPS Hauraki to join the programme. Enrolment criteria apply.
