Choosing a GP or medical centre

Primary care is the health care that you receive in your local community.

Most services are based around General Practice (GP) clinics and provided by GPs, practice nurses and other health professionals (such as Māori community health workers and health promoters) who work to prevent illness as well as provide treatments.

Primary health care covers a broad range of health and preventative services, including health education, counselling, disease prevention and screening.

Primary Health Organisations in the Waikato

What is a Primary Healthcare Organisation (PHO)?

Each GP practice in the Waikato is a member of a Primary Health Organisation (PHO). The PHOs help health professionals to provide better community based heath services.

Choosing a general practitioner (GP)?

Different practices provide different services. It is important that you know about a practice before enrolling with that practice and the PHO which they belong to. We know that the fees charged by practices are often important in choosing a GP.

In general the normal fees you will pay to see a doctor are on the following websites or the tables below.

It is better to see your GP during the normal working day hours because you'll often be able to see your regular GP and after hours fees will often be higher.
