Waikato Hospital celebrating 125 years

Waikato Health Memorabilia Trust

Preserving our history for the benefit of future generations.

Waikato Hospital has been Hamilton's 'hospital on the hill' since 1886.

In addition to Waikato Hospital, the region has been and continues to be richly served by the district hospitals of Thames, Taumarunui, Te Kuiti, Tokoroa and Tokanui (for 85½ years) and now the Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre at Waikato Hospital.

Over the years a wealth of memorabilia has accumulated, charting the evolution of health services and technology.

For many years, a small and dedicated group has been collecting equipment, books, documents, photographs, uniforms and the like in a bid to preserve rare and interesting material about the history of health for the benefit of future generations.

In 2004, the work of this group was formalised under the banner of the Waikato Health Memorabilia Trust, which is a Registered Charitable Trust with the Charities Commission - No. CC 10234.

  • any other purposes that will result in the collection, preservation and public display of medical and other health-related memorabilia.

The Trust is linked to the redevelopment of Thames and Waikato hospital campuses. It will ensure items of historical interest are assessed and if necessary “rescued' before buildings are demolished. It will also try to ensure display areas are built in to new and existing facilities during construction and refurbishment, and are available to the public for the purposes of education and research.

In December 2009 “Under One Roof” A history of Waikato Hospital written by John Armstrong was published. This is a continuation of the work published by Dr Rex Wright St-Clair in 1987, “From cottage hospital to regional base hospital” Waikato Hospital 1887-1987.
