About Waikato Hospital and Hamilton

Waikato Hospital is a teaching hospital - its extensive campus includes a large library geared to assist with research, a clincial education centre that is a division of the Auckland University Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, and clinical skills simulation centre with audiovisual links to surgical theatres and adjacent teaching rooms, plus a wide range of the latest skills and simulation training equipment.

The mainstay of clinical practice and learning for house officers is the ward work. Because of its size and scope, Waikato Hospital has a wide range of both common and extremely rare and specialised patient groups.  House officers are well supported by specialist registrars and their consultants who are usually freely available and approachable.

Three main clinical blocks and a theatre block are at the core of the hospital, and a brand new clinical centre and ED are currently being built. A leading edge AT&R hub is planned across the road. 

Waikato Hospital campus is on the edge of downtown Hamilton. The campus has onsite parking as well as lockable bike sheds and showers, an excellent staff cafeteria, banking and ATM facilities, and a RMO Lounge. It even has its own community police constable, and there's a childcare centre conveniently across the road. Our Waikato DHB intranet keeps you up-to-date with news, views, and a classifieds section - great for finding a place to rent, or a car to buy.

Hamilton is a "not too big, not too small, just right" sort of city. It gives you a mix of action, events, relaxation and recreation. You can stroll along the river, jog around the lake, or kite board over the waves at nearby Raglan. You can have a romantic picnic in the Italian garden, a sophisticated dinner out downtown, or go clubbing through the wee small hours. Whatever suits your style. 

Hamilton is also home to Waikato University, Waikato Technical Institute (Wintec), Fonterra head office, a large number of secondary and primary schools, and a growing commercial and retail sector - providing opportunities for partners or family members.  We're happy to point you in the right direction.

Thames Hospital

Looking to gain a more generalist clinical experience? Wanting to get hands-on alongside excellent clinicians?

Then think about working at Thames Hospital. It is modern 54-bed rural community hospital at Thames on the Coromandel Peninsula.

A smaller hospital can offer more 'hands-on' clinical involvement within a friendly and supportive team. A recent major redevelopment programme has added new clinical facilities and equipment, and modernised the hospital to a high standard.

Thames is a lovely coastal town renown for its fishing and friendliness.

Some registrar trainee positions are selected by the respective College, who then make their recommendations for appointees to Waikato DHB; other registrar positions are selected by Waikato DHB and rotations are made based on your run preferences and/or training needs.

Application process


You do not need to use a recruitment agency when applying to work at Waikato DHB. You can apply directly to the medical recruitment coordinator.

Applications for house offer positions are welcome at any time. Talk to us about what is available, keep in touch.

All applications and doctor’s personal information are dealt with in the strictest confidence.


The application process for Year 2, 3 and 4 house officers and registrars (including NZREX graduates who are applying outside the ACE system timeline) is:
  • Use the official Waikato DHB application form. The link is included in each position vacancy on our website or you can download a copy of the application form PDF.

Gather the following application documents:

  • Completed application form
  • Updated copy of your curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Three completed referee reports
  • Copy of your current New Zealand practising certificate, if you have one with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
  • IELTS results (where required)

We will also require certified copies of the following documents, but our medical recruitment coordinator will request these at the appropriate time during the application process:

  • Medical qualification/transcript
  • Personal details of your passport (and work visa and permit/NZ residency permit if applicable) OR birth certificate accompanied by driver’s licence
  • Post-graduate qualification (if applicable)

  • If you are an overseas trained doctor you will need to check eligibility for registration with the MCNZ to practice medicine in New Zealand. This will determine your registration pathways

    Also go to the MCNZ’s fees page to check the costs associated with registration.

  • Again, if you are an overseas trained doctor you will need to check with Immigration New Zealand to see if you are eligible to work in New Zealand.

  • The process we follow once an application is received:

    • The medical recruitment coordinator will contact you and discuss run allocations, how long you are wanting to stay and when you are thinking of starting employment. At this stage we need to discuss any special requirements e.g. if you want to return to the UK for a fixed period to attend interviews or sit exams.

    • You CV will be forwarded to the appropriate clinical director for vetting.

    • If your CV is approved as suitable, and if a suitable vacancy exists, we will send you a job offer letter, a position description and a job acceptance form. Each job offer normally has a stated time within which you need to accept or decline the offer.

    • If your CV is not suitable, we will advise you.

    • When you accept a job offer, the medical recruitment coordinator will send you an enrolment and information pack and get in touch with you about any additional forms and information we need.
    • The medical recruitment coordinator then lodges the papers with the MCNZ to start the formal process of getting you registered. The MCNZ will notify you when registration has been approved and will send you a list of MCNZ agents you can visit on your arrival in New Zealand to have all your documentation formally checked and approved – so remember to bring the original documents with you

The whole process can take up to 13 weeks to complete.
