Meet the team
Our role is to recruit, roster and retain resident medical officers (RMOs) at Waikato Hospital. We coordinate the Year 1 house officer selection working within the ACE process, and we also coordinate house officer, senior house officer and registrar recruitment.
We aim to provide a friendly, accessible centre where you can call in for a chat or with questions and queries. Our 'open door' approach means you can find support and guidance on a variety of issues from your run allocations and terms of employment to meal chits and leave forms.
The current team consists of an RMO Unit manager (Paul Miller), two RMO administrators (Ripeka Harrison and Bronwyn Pipe) and a medical recruitment coordinator (Penny Simpson).
It's a busy environment at a large, complex hospital - but we will find the time and space to get to know you, help you and make you feel at home.
We are responsible for:
- house officer orientation
- rosters (sugical house officers, O&G SHO rosters, and all the medicine rosters)
- checking Annual Practising Certificates and, in conjunction with the MCNZ, registration status
- house officer run allocations
- managing the surgical and medical relief pools
- maintain a central repository of all RMO run descriptions
- admin duties such as meal 'chits', leave forms and the monthly RMO newsletters.

Position descriptions
Waikato DHB has a position description (PD) for each ‘run’ that an RMO works in, for year one house officers, other house officers, plus registrars.
A copy of the relevant PD should be sent to potential candidates along with their job offer letter.
Each PD is composed of three sections:
SECTION ONE
This detail the HR-component requirements of employment at Waikato DHB and the related key accountabilities eg, personal and professional development, purpose of the position, training and experience, key competencies, etc.
This section is generic for all house officer positions and generic for all registrar position
SECTION TWO
This section relates directly to clause 10 of the RMOs’ Multi Employer Collective Agreement (MECA).
It lists:
- The MCNZ accredited categorisation – on the front page (and NOT to be confused with the pay scale categorisation which appears on the back pages following ‘hours of work’ and ‘salary’ details)
- Clinical duties
- Scheduled education and training
- Daily work schedule
- How assessments are to be completed
- Administrative duties required of the RMO
- Rostered duties and hours of work
- Salary – how these hours of work relate to the run size (the MECA has set the average weekly hours worked and has graduated these from an ‘F’ category = 40-44.9 hrs to an ‘A’ category = 65+hrs). Obviously the higher the number of average hours worked per week, the higher the pay.
SECTION THREE
Appendices
- ‘Delegated Responsibilities of RMOs - When to Call the Consultant’
- ‘Run expectations and Learning Objectives’ – this is a work in progress and it is hoped this appendix will be completed for all PDs in 2012
All PDs are required to be ratified by the doctors’ union - the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA)
There are set rules around position descriptions and how and when changes can be made to these (‘Review of Run Descriptions/Salary – clause 12.0 of the RDA MECA)
