Waikato Immunisation

National Immunisation Register (NIR)

The NIR is a national database, which has been recording immunisation data for every baby born in the Waikato since July 2005.

The staff at the Immunisation Registry in Waikato DHB work closely with all immunisation providers, as a central point of contact, to ensure children’s records are accurate and they can receive the correct vaccines on time.

The service primarily focuses on vaccinating children aged 0-6 years, with an even greater concentration of vaccinations in children under 2.

Hospital Opportunistic Immunisation Service (HOIS)

Waikato DHB hospitals are unique in offering vaccination to children across all services.

If a child presents at ED, is admitted to a ward, or attends an outpatient clinic, their immunisation history is checked against NIR.

If any vaccines are required, these will be offered when appropriate.

If parents have any concerns or queries about immunisation, our Immunisation Coordinator Kim Hunter is available.

Similarly, if health professionals have any clinical questions or concerns (eg. Allergies, referrals) Kim is happy to help.

Kim can be contacted by calling 0800 100 273 and selecting option 3.

Immunisation

What vaccinations do the children receive?

There is a standardised course of immunisations for your child, including booster shots. It is important they have their full course, including boosters later on to ensure continuing strong protection.

It is also important these are given in a timely fashion as delaying vaccinations leaves children unnecessarily vulnerable to infection.
