Pacific community action

back to HEHA

Waikato DHB is committed to improving the health of Pacific people.

The rates of obesity for Pacific people in New Zealand are alarmingly high with 80.9 per cent of Pacific males and 82 per cent of Pacific females are overweight (MoH, 2003).

The Waikato DHB region has a significant Pacific population.

If there is to be a real impact on rates of non-communicable diseases, obesity must be addressed.

Funding available for Pacific health projects

Waikato DHB receives annual funding from the Ministry of Health for Pacific communities to carry out community action projects, activities and initiatives aimed at improving nutrition, increasing physical activity and reducing obesity.

Details regarding future funding rounds will be announced shortly.

A component of the funding received is tagged to Pacific community and workforce development.  Waikato DHB uses this funding to support the Pacific community based workforce to undertake nutrition, physical activity and associated training to support their work.

Details regarding training offered will be posted here.
