Free of charge dental care for pre-school children
Parents, guardians and whanau are encouraged to contact their local primary school to enrol their pre-school children for regular free dental checks and treatment. Information about dental care for pre-school children is available from your local Plunket nurse, GP or Tamariki Ora provider.
Free of charge dental care for children aged 5 to years 8
Free regular dental checks and treatment for school aged children are available from the School Dental Service, which are usually provided at their local primary school.
If the school dental therapist considers that special dental treatment is required, she may refer you to a dentist who holds a contract for the provision of special dental treatment for children. This treatment will be free.
Free of charge dental care for adolescents (year 9 to 18th birthday)
Adolescents are entitled to an annual check-up and basic routine dental care free of charge from dentists who contract with Waikato District Health Board.
Also included are children, year 8 at school and under, who have been referred or released early from the school dental service as not being able to be treated by them due to medical or management reasons, and whose transfer has been approved by the DHB Approving Dental Officer.
The dentist may refer the adolescent to a specialist dentist for
restorative dentistry e.g. building of partial dentures and minor
surgical operations. This is available free of charge from a dentist
contracted to provide special dental service to adolescents.
Routine
dental treatment care focuses on the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay) and caring for teeth that need repair whether or not they give trouble. It does not include cosmetic dentistry or orthodontics
e.g. if you wish for white fillings to be used on back teeth, you will
have to pay for this treatment.

Immediate entry to a dentist listed above is not guaranteed, as a dentist may from time to time close their books due to full caseloads or choose to provide a service to family members of existing clients. The school dental service will provide information to you and your child at the end of year 8 on how to enrol with a contracted dentist.
Private dentists
You can choose to pay for your child’s/adolescent’s oral health care. In this situation there is a range of private dentists who can provide this service. They may be listed in the white and the yellow pages of the telephone directory. Private dentists are also listed on

Contacting a dentist in an emergency for pre-school children and children up to year 9:
- contact the School Dental Service. If this services is not available (closed due to school holidays) then
- contact your own dentist for information of the dentist on call
- if you are not registered with a dentist contact Anglesea Clinic Dental Care in Hamilton.

For acute injury and trauma contact the hospital Accident and Emergency Department.
Emergency dental services for low income adults
Emergency dental care is that which is immediately necessary for the relief of pain and infection.
Eligible clients/patients
- Services should be provided to any holder of a valid Community Services Card.

There are some exclusions to this service. They can be confirmed by speaking to your dentist, WINZ or Matt Watson at Waikato DHB (
