Breast Screening

BreastScreen Aotearoa logo
BreastScreen Aotearoa (BSA) is a free national breast screening programme that checks women for early signs of breast cancer. The programme aims to reduce the number of women who die from breast cancer.

Who can have a free screening mammogram?

You can have a free screening mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Aotearoa if you meet the following criteria:
  • you are aged 45-69 years
  • you have no symptoms of breast cancer
  • you have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months
  • you are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • you are eligible for public health services in New Zealand.

How do I join BSA?

Breast screening at WaikatoYou can ring 0800 270 200 or email bsm@waikatodhb.govt.nz to enrol and make an appointment. Appointments are available during work usual work hours, some evenings and some Saturday mornings.

Mammograms are provided at the Breast Care Centre, Waikato Hospital, or on one of our three mobile breast screening units. The mobile visits every town within the Waikato and some of the remote areas of the Bay of Plenty and Lakes DHBs.

Services provided:

  • Health promotion service throughout the midland region, enabling women to access the screening services through the provision of information, education and recruitment. This service utilises community development principles to access the community groups and iwi, hapu and whanau to enable the accessing of screening services by women in the region.

  • The Regional Coordination Centre provides identification, recruitment, invitation and booking services for Breast Screen Midland, including components in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Also complementing the service is the provision of local and regional data management and monitoring.

  • Screening mammography – at both fixed sites throughout the region and also via the services of a mobile unit staffed and managed by Waikato DHB services currently.
Waikato DHB contracts private radiology services to provide services to women who live in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes DHB areas.
