Postgraduate funding opportunities

Clinical Training Agency (CTA) offers postgraduate funding opportunities to registered nurses.
CTA Handbook

This funding, offered by CTA, is an exciting and positive opportunity, offered to registered nurses to pursue postgraduate education.

CTA is the funding arm of the Ministry of Health (NZ). Waikato District Health Board manages this large budget. Applications for funding are made annually to the postgraduate nurse coordinator of the programme.

The funding covers the cost of each paper, clinical release time and some travel and accommodation.

Registered nurses who meet the criteria set by CTA, are eligible to apply for the funding. These applications must be accompanied by a career plan to ensure that the study being undertaken meets the health targets of Waikato DHB. Applications are submitted around October, and are for the whole of the following year.

At present there are approximately 211 registered nurses enrolled in CTA funded postgraduate education at Waikato DHB. You could be one of them!

Priorities considered for 2011 CTA funding

To establish transparency and equity in the CTA funding programme, the following priority funding framework has been developed.  Ring fenced funding will only be allocated to the identified group:  Primary, Rural and Long Term Conditions and therefore no framework applies here.

A percentage of funding will be applied to each section. This will enable those sections not in the health priorities to obtain some support.

Within the hospital the following groups will receive priority:

A. Clinical Nurse Manager, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Educator positions To show the Waikato District Health Board support to those in nursing leadership and management positions, these applications will receive high priority consideration for CTA funding

Requirements:

  • Clinical Nurse Manager - nursing leadership and management papers e.g. Leadership and Management in Nursing (WINTEC) Nursing Leadership Practicum(UOA) Leadership in the Health Care Environment (VUW).

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist - two speciality papers e.g. Advanced Assessment and Clinical Reasoning (WINTEC) and one speciality paper. There would be strong Waikato DHB support for the completion of a Masters program with prescribing depending on the current speciality needs of the District Health Board.

  • Nurse Educator – two papers, e.g. adult education papers such as Teaching in Professional Practice (WINTEC) or Clinical Education Practicum (UOA) and any other nursing education paper, possibly a speciality, which meets the criteria.
