Maxillofacial & Oral Surgery

Maxillofacial & oral surgery is concerned with the treatment and care of patients with congenital, traumatic, malignant and other pathological conditions of the mouth and face.



The maxillofacial & oral surgery service provides secondary and tertiary inpatient and outpatient services. Waikato Hospital is the Level six tertiary centre for the Midland region. The service is a key component of the multi-speciality team, managing Midland region patients with major head and neck disorders and children with cleft lip and palate.

The service runs a busy outpatient service as well as having inpatient facilities shared with the plastics and reconstructive service.


Who we are:

  • Three oral & maxillofacial surgeons
  • One oral and maxillofacial surgery advanced trainee registrar position
  • One oral and maxillofacial house officers
  • Three dental house officers
  • Four dental surgery assistants
  • One maxillofacial technician
    Meet Mike Williams, our maxillofacial technician
  • Orthodontist contracted for the management of cleft palate and cranio-facial deformities
  • Clinical nurse manager.

We provide:

  • Formal and informal teaching as follows, combined teaching sessions and monthly journal club in combination with Plastic Surgery division.

  • Tutorials with oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The department publishes annually and presents papers at national and international meetings.  Senior staff regularly attend national and international conferences to meet continuing education requirements and update their skills and knowledge.
