Waikato’s consultant dermatologists are Clinical Associate Professor Amanda Oakley, Honorary Associate Professor Marius Rademaker (Clinical Director), and Dr Anthony Yung. Dr Sarah Hill will be joining the Department in September 2010. There are two full time registrars, who are advanced trainees in Dermatology. Waikato Clinical School medical students attend clinics regularly.

Outpatient clinics for new patients and follow-ups are held every weekday on the 7th floor of the Elizabeth Rothwell Building at Waikato Hospital.

Subspecialty clinics include paediatrics, patch testing, vulval diseases, skin cancer, and transplant medicine. Combined clinics are held with Department of Radiation Oncology as well as Sexual Health/Gynaecology. Assessment of skin lesions includes off-site digital imaging “virtual lesion clinics”, provided in collaboration with MoleMap New Zealand.

Dermatology outreach clinics take place in Rotorua, Tokoroa, Te Kuiti and Taranaki. These are supplemented by telemedicine consultations via video conferencing.

Skilled dermatology nursing staff members, led by clinic co-ordinator Jo Shea-Kelly, provide phototherapy for patients with inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and eczema. There are nurse-led clinics for paediatric atopic eczema. Our nurses treat skin lesions with cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy and topical therapy, and they assist the dermatologists with surgical procedures to remove skin cancers. Some patients requiring complex procedures are referred to Waikato’s Plastic & Reconstructive surgeons.

The Department has a strong academic focus, and is particularly noted for its research and publications on medical dermatology, teledermatology and teledermoscopy.
