This department services both outpatient and inpatient care, with an increasing emphasis on ambulatory and day surgery.

Ophthalmology

The ward shares its beds with otolaryngology. Inpatients get care and treatment of medical and surgical diseases of the visual system. Inpatient beds are adjacent to the specialist eye theatre.

We provide general ophthalmology services to the Waikato DHB area and tertiary services to the Midland region.

The ophthalmology outpatient department runs multiple general sessions every day. The service also provides clinics for diabetes, paediatric, corneal and retinal patients.

The ophthalmology consultants are fellowship trained in glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastics & orbital surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina & anterior segment surgery.

  • Clinical director
  • Eight part-time consultants
  • Four SHO/registrar positions (two assigned as ophthalmology training positions)
  • One SHO
  • Clinical nurse managers - inpatient and outpatient
  • Nurse educator.

We provide:

  • Formal and informal education and training sessions are available. We encourage senior RMOs to attend relevant courses and conferences both in New Zealand and overseas.

  • Outreach services extend to the Midland region - in Thames, Tokoroa, and Gisborne.
