Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery

back to Services listing

The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Unit provides a unique combination of cardiac, thoracic and vascular procedures in the one speciality area. All major cases spend the first 24-48 hours in the High Dependency Unit or Intensive Care following surgery.

Cardiac

The Cardiac Surgery service provides secondary / tertiary inpatient and outpatient services to the Midland region, with the exception of paediatric cardiac surgery. There are approximately 500 cases per year. Cardiac surgery holds a quarterly audit meeting where registrars present both cardiac and thoracic cases.

Thoracic

There are weekly thoracic cases scheduled, which include conditions of the chest, oesophagus, lungs and mediastinum. These areas of practice may involve congential, infective, degenerative, metabolic and neoplastic conditions. The consultants involved in thoracic surgery either perform cardiac or vascular surgery.

Vascular

Vascular Surgery provides busy secondary and tertiary services, both acute and elective to the Midland region. An excellent relationship between the department and radiological teams has lead to the successful provision of endoluminal procedures for abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repairs.

The department has a duplex ultrasound laboratory, which provides a scanning service to the vascular depatment and other selected services. Ultrasonographer sessions are also available.

Nursing

Ward 14 is a pre and post cardiothoracic and vascular surgery ward. It has 32 beds including a six bedded high acuity unit.

The Ward 14 team is an extremely friendly and supportive multicultural team, with ongoing support and opportunities for professional development being paramount.
