Palliative Care

| Palliative Care is the active care of people with advanced,
progressive disease which is no longer responsive to curative
treatment. It is a holistic programme of care provided by a
multi-disciplinary team and is aimed at improving the quality of life
for people who are dying and their families/whanau.

After hours calls go Ward 25. The ward co-ordinator will answer calls after hours and direct them to the relevant medical staff, if appropriate.
This regional service is comprised of medical specialists, registrars, specialist nurses and support staff, and functions within the Oncology Service of Waikato Hospital.
The primary aim of palliative medicine is to prevent the patient from developing or suffering from some of the troublesome and distressing symptoms associated with disease progression. Doctors wishing to train in palliative medicine should contact the Clinical Director – Palliative Care.

Hospice Waikato provides a variety of specialised care services for people who are dying – supporting them, their families and carers through illness, death and bereavement. Services are provided to people in the community where they live and from facilities on-site at Hospice Waikato. This includes a 10 bed in-patient unit and Rainbow Place which specialises in the care of children and young people who are affected by the serious illness and/or death of a loved one, or who have a life limiting/threatening or palliative illness themselves.
