Mental Health & Addictions provides a specialist mental health and addictions services to the population of the Waikato District Health Board and regional forensic services to the Midland region which encompasses the Lakes, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty district health boards.

According to the World Health Organization, mental illness accounts for 15 per cent of the total burden of disease in the developed world, with depression set to become the second leading cause of disability in the world by 2020.

For several years, Mental Health has been a priority health area for the New Zealand government. In 2005 the release of Te Tāhuhu – Improving Mental Health 2005-2015: The Second New Zealand Mental Health and Addiction Plan, and the following  release in 2006 of Te Kōkiri - The Mental Health and Addiction Action Plan 2006–2015, set the stage for new developments in the sector.
