Taumarunui Hospital Emergency Department trials national first solution
Taumarunui Hospital Emergency Department is trialling a new six-month pilot where St John advanced paramedic Janet Curtis will work alongside ED staff to triage, treat and discharge patients.
We are joining forces to sustain local health services for the Taumarunui community and if it works, this may be an initiative which will be rolled out throughout the rest of Waikato DHB’s rural communities to strengthen health workforce sustainability.
The initiative is not about replacing doctors and nurses; but more about complementing and helping them and trying to join up our rural health workforce to improve health services to rural communities.
The advanced paramedic will work within their standing orders, which means they will only carry out services they are trained and allowed to provide.
If you have any questions as a Taumarunui Hospital ED patient, speak to a hospital doctor or nurse in the first instance.

Janet Curtis |
Q. |
Are advanced paramedics skilled to work in emergency departments?
A. Yes, advanced paramedics hold a Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and in Janet’s case, she has a Masters degree.
|
Q. |
Will the ambulance service in Taumarunui still be available?
A. Yes, there will be no change to the ambulance services in Taumarunui.
|
Q. |
Why is this being trialled in Taumarunui?
A. We know that Taumarunui is a place where we have difficulty recruiting staff. If the pilot is successful, then the service will be rolled out to other rural areas.
|
Q. |
Why don’t they just employ more services?
A. We need more of both.
|
Q. |
What if I don’t want to be seen by an advanced paramedic?
A. You have a choice to be seen by your general practitioner or wait until another staff member is available.
|
Q. |
Who is the advanced paramedic accountable to?
A. Like nurses, they will be accountable to their professional bodies but when working in the Emergency Department they will be working under the control of the doctor on duty. |
