Situated in the heart of the North Island, in a warm and sheltered scenic valley, Taumarunui township has a population of about 7000 residents, although covers a catchment area of 12,000 people.

Taumarunui is within the Ruapehu district, which includes the largest ski field region in the North Island and is a busy rural facility, which employs 94 staff. It has been an accredited service since 1991.
