Forestry and pastoral farming, particularly dairying, are the predominant activities in the district with around 20% of the workforce employed in forestry and agriculture and another 28% employed in manufacturing associated with these industries.

Approximately half of the district is covered in forests, most of which is plantation forestry and the southern and western boundaries are bordered by the Waikato River.

Many recreational activities centre on the forests, streams and hydro lakes including bush walking, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, water skinning trout fishing. There is also a strong network of clubs, providing many opportunities from sports to theatre.
