Waikato sexual health physician Jane Morgan identified youth access to alcohol and excessive drinking as a contributing factor to high rates of Chlamydia transmission in New Zealand. Dr Morgan told the Health Waikato Advisory Committee in April 2010 about a project she is leading for the Ministry of Health which aims to improve management of Chlamydia within the Waikato DHB region, and ultimately inform national strategy. The role was misunderstood when first introduced, but eight years to the day since New Zealand's first nurse practitioner (NP) was registered, the role is flourishing. Waikato Hospital-based neonatal nurse Deborah Harris made history when, as a 39 year old mother of three, she became the country's first nurse practitioner on 11 December 2001. Read more.

A 77-year-old Cambridge woman became the first person in New Zealand to get a new pacemaker system developed for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. Read more.

Waikato Hospital is the first hospital in New Zealand to install an ultrasound technique which identifies potentially fatal liver disease and alleviates the need for painful biopsies.  Clinical director of gastroenterology Dr Frank Weilert said in February 2009, the procedure will reduce the number of liver biopsies by 50-60 per cent at Waikato Hospital. A large team of surgeons, theatre nurses, anaethetists and support staff worked on Saturday 29 November 2008 at Waikato Hospital - for free. They donated their skills and time to give a 28-year-old man from Papua New Guinea a fresh chance at a normal life in his community. Read more.

Sri Lankan-born doctor Sanjeevan Pasupati has been wowing the New Zealand medical world, carrying out first-ever procedures at Waikato Hospital. Silver Ribbon Gynaecology Clinical Nurse Specialist Stephanie Campbell-Wilson started the gynaecology cancer clinical nurse specialist role in August 2008. Read more.

Waikato District Health Board is taking the lead on the development of a new National Incident Management System project for all New Zealand DHBs. The project, which was launched in Wellington in early 2008, will see Waikato DHB, in conjunction with its partner Communio, develop a nationwide policy aimed at making hospitals even safer.
