Enquiries counter

Enquries deskThere are two enquiries counters, one is situated in the foyer, Level 1 Menzies Building, at the top of the staircase at the Selwyn Street entrance to the main hospital and the other is located in L1 of the new linking corridor to the main entry building and carpark.

The enquiries counter in L1 of the new linking corridor to the main entry building and carpark is where security passes are provided to visitors requiring access to the hospital out of hours.

    7.30am - 8pm Monday - Friday
    8.30am - 5pm Saturday, Sunday & public holidays

  • Enquiries counter (in L1 of the new linking corridor to the main entry building and carpark)
    8am - 4.30pm Monday - Friday

Enquiries about your condition, by you and your support person if you wish this, should be made to the doctor looking after you. Your nurse / midwife can also help keep you informed.

Shuttlebug & Shuttlebus

ShuttleBugThe bugs are driven on weekdays (8.30am-4pm) by volunteers.

The bugs depart from the new main entry building (level B5) and have a regular circuit to MRI, Lomas, Lions Cancer Lodge, Hockin, Hilda Ross House, BEC, Bendal buildings and then back to B5.

Waikato Hospital's on-campus transport service has been expanded to include a bright red van that will give patients and visitors rides to their appointments.

ShuttleBusThe shuttlebus will travel around the hospital every 20 minutes on weekdays (8am-5pm) giving free rides to those who would find it difficult to walk the distance from the carpark building to their clinic appointment.

The bus’ main stop is outside the new main entry building (B5) and has a route around the campus allowing it to stop outside Hilda Ross House and the Waiora and Elizabeth Rothwell buildings.

Hospital Hosts

Hospital Hosts

This is a hospitality service that provides direction and physical assistance to anyone coming into the hospital e.g. escorting people to their destination, assisting patients and / or family members in and out of the car, assistance with wheelchairs, etc.

They work from 8.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday and are located in the new entry building at Level B5, B3 and L1.

Food

Meals for patients

Nutrition and Food Services will provide meals and beverages for you while you are in hospital. Your food will be prepared with care and we aim to five the best possible service.

A selective menu card will be delivered to you each day for the following day's meals. Please make your choice on the menu as soon as you can. Keep the menu card with you until it is collected. Do not send it back with your meal tray. When you are first admitted to hospital, the ward will notify the food service and a standard meal will be sent to you until you are able to select your own choices on the menu.

Meals are delivered within the hours of:
  • breakfast 7am - 8.30am
  • lunch 12noon - 1.30pm
  • dinner 5pm - 6.30pm.
Tea and coffee will be offered after breakfast and lunch, and at moring tea, afternoon tea and supper time.

If you need assistance at meal times, please ask your nurse / midwife.

The menu has been planned to meet the nutritional needs of the majority of people.

If you need a special diet, please ask your nurse / midwife to contact the clinical dietitian for your ward.

We hope you enjoy your meals while you are in hospital.


Food

Cafe

Patients, relatives and visitors are welcome to use the cafe situated on level 2 of the Waiora Waikato Building - just follow the teacups on the on lino floor.

A wide range of hot and cold food and beverages are available for purchase.

The hospital shop is situated on Level 01 Menzies Building.

Newspapers

Newspapers

Newspapers are available for patients and visitors to purchase.

The New Zealand Herald is delivered to most wards between 7am and 8am daily.

The Waikato Times is delivered each afternoon to wards and is also available from boxes in the Waiora Waikato Building foyer and opposite enquiries in the foyer Level 1, Menzies Building.

Telephone calls

Telephone

Wards have card or coin operated phones from which family and friends may be contacted. There is a card phone located on level O1, Menzies Building, a card and coin phone located on level 1, Menzies Building and on level 1 Waiora Waikato Building - outside the Emergency Department.

Phone cards are sold at the hospital shop. There is a coin phone in the main foyer of the Elizabeth Rothwell Building.

Cellular phones may be brought into some wards with the permission of the clinical nurse leader / clinical midwife leader. In some cases their use is not permitted because of their effect on some electronic equipment.

Please ask a staff member the location of the nearest phone that you or your relatives can use.

Mail


Post Office facilities are not available at Waikato Hospital. However, letters already stamped can be posted at the mail box in the pink corridor or send to the hospital mailroom through the internal hospital courier service. Large stamped parcels can be left in the hospital mailroom for posting.

Stamps are available from the hospital shop level 01, Menzies Building. Further information on external postal or courier services may be obtained from the hospital mailroom.

Cashiers' office

The cashiers' office is located on the ground floor of Hockin Building. This location is not far from the new main entry to Waikato Hospital down the bottom of the hill, which is easily accessible by lift from the main hospital corridor. Patients and visitors should ask at the Hockin reception desk.

This office is responsible for patient accommodation claims.

Pharmacy

PharmacyThe clinical pharmacists aim to supply you with information to enable you to use medicines safely and effectively in your treatment. They regularly visit your ward and are available to answer any medicine-related questions you may have.

When coming into hospital, please make sure you bring all those medicines you have been taking, even those your doctor may not have prescribed (e.g. tablets for a cold, herbal remedies, vitamins, etc). Unless your medicines are changed, these will be returned to you on discharge. Staff will be available to answer any questions you may have, so please ask.

Ward staff will notify you before your discharge as to whether your prescription will be dispensed at the local hospital pharmacy. Please note - normal fees apply. However, most precriptions will have to be obtained from your normal external phamacy.

The pharmacy is located outside the main entrance to the hospital off Selwyn Street.

Overnight accommodation

Hilda Ross House

Hilda Ross House

Hilda Ross House is a hospital hotel, owned and operated by Waikato DHB. It has a capacity of 79 rooms (163 beds) and  operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility is specifically designed to meet the needs of the people using our regional based hospital ie pre-admission/post discharge/ clinic patients, supporters of inpatients (in wards), Waikato DHB staff, and medical students. 

To make a booking internal wards/departments are required to complete the HRH Accommodation Reservation Confirmation Form. This can be obtained electronically, by fax and/or hard copy. With self referrals, reception staff will complete a manual booking form. It is important that all sections of the form are filled in where required to ensure the correct charge and room is allocated.


Getting to Hilda Ross House

As a result of the Service and Campus Redevelopment project currently underway at Waikato Hospital, the entrance into Hilda Ross House has changed.

The facility can now be accessed on the eastern side of the building. A blue line has been painted from the hospital’s main red corridor to show you the way.

Limited drop-off parking (15 minutes) is available outside the building. Enter hospital grounds through Gate 1 off Pembroke Street and follow the signs.

Te Whare TaurimaTe Whare Taurima

Te Whare Taurima is a seven room (20 beds) accommodation facility located opposite Health Waikato campus on Pembroke Street. It is a short term, low cost accommodation facility managed under a Maori Kaupapa philosophy.  It provides a shared kitchen, dining room, lounge, bathroom and a laundry service.  Bedding and linen is also provided.

The service is available to all ethnic groups who are supporting an inpatient in a Waikato Hospital ward.  However, priority will be given to people from outside the Hamilton city boundary who have a family member in the Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit and/or have a family member who is terminally or critical ill.
