Graduate Nurse - Primary Health Care
Midlands Health Network Ltd is a not-for-profit organisation that works with general practices, community providers, allied providers and secondary services to deliver superior health care to our communities. There are nearly half a million people enrolled at more than 100 practices in the Lakes, Tairawhiti, Taranaki and Waikato DHB regions.
This is a unique opportunity to gain skills and experience in a primary health care environment.
We are looking to employ new graduate nurses for two 6 month placements in general practice or other primary care setting in the Waikato region. Rural and urban options available.
This is a fixed term agreement for up to 12 months commencing early 2012.

NETP Programme

Clinical placements are in Waikato Hospital, rural hospitals, primary health care, community and aged care.
A supported learning environment is central to the delivery of the Waikato DHB Nurse Entry to Practice programme.
Clinical placements – Waikato Hospital
Registered nurse (RN) graduates are employed into the NETP programme on a fixed term contract for twelve months. There will be two six month placements in the majority of cases.
During the recruitment process applicants will be asked to indicate areas in which you would like to work in the first rotation. Clinical placements are planned to take into consideration your choices as well as current service requirements.
Clinical placement options:
- Cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery
- Coronary Care Unit
- Older persons’ and rehabilitation services – acute rehabilitation, comprehensive stroke service, orthopaedic rehabilitation wards
- General surgical
- Neurosurgery unit
- Plastics and urology
- Elective short stay surgical unit
- Ear, nose throat and ophthalmology
- Orthopaedics
- General medicine
- Renal medicine and renal unit
- Respiratory medicine
- Medical day care unit
- Intensive care unit
- Emergency department
- Operating theatres – including short stay surgery and PACU
- Neonatal intensive care unit
- Paediatrics – medical
- Paediatrics – surgical
- Oncology ward
- Women’s health
Clinical placements – rural hospitals
Taumarunui, Te Kuiti, Tokoroa and Thames Hospitals.
These rural campuses offer the RN graduate a comprehensive experience within a general inpatient setting. These experiences include: emergency care, general medicine, general surgery, rehabilitation, respite and palliative care.
Thames hospital provides two, six month clinical rotations in the inpatient setting, while Thames Emergency department offers a twelve month placement.
Te Kuiti, Tokoroa and Taumarunui hospitals offer one twelve month clinical placement with a diversity of practice in the rural setting.
Clinical placements – primary health care, community and aged care
RN graduates are employed by provider organisations in these settings with full support to participate in the Waikato DHB NETP programme. The participating organisations change annually and may include, but are not limited to general practice, Plunket, aged care, and corrections as well as public health nursing and district nursing within the DHB.

Orientation
There is a structured orientation both to the Waikato DHB NETP progamme and to the RN graduate’s clinical placement.
Preceptorship
Each RN graduate has an assigned preceptor/s who has completed an approved training programme. Preceptors and other members of the clinical team work alongside RN graduates to support goal setting and opportunities for reflection.
RN graduates are also supported by the NETP programme coordinator, NETP nurse educator and nurse educators in clinical areas.
Education
The NETP programme offers a formal, structured and supported learning programme. During the year RN graduates complete one thirty credit, level 8 module, towards a postgraduate certificate from the University of Auckland. This module, along with further NETP education days synthesises knowledge gained within the BN degree and has a clear link to clinical practice. There are ten designated education days over the programme.
RN graduates appointed to the rural campuses of Thames, Tokoroa, Te Kuiti and Taumarunui hospitals, and those employed in primary health, community and aged care settings, attend the Waikato campus for the education days.
Professional development and recognition programme (PDRP)
RN graduates are required to submit a portfolio at a competent RN level prior to exiting the programme, as per WaikatoDHB PDRP or other accredited PDRP provider.The professional resources of the WaikatoDHB professional development unit will assist to complete this portfolio
Support for Maori and Pacifica registered nurse graduates
WaikatoDHB has a commitment to support the development of the Maori and Pacifica nurse workforce in the Waikato region. Senior nursing support in Te Puna Orange provides access to cultural and professional support for Maori and Pacifica registered nurse graduates.
Ongoing employment for Waikato DHB graduates on fixed term contracts
Ongoing employment with the Waikato District health Board is subject to graduates meeting the requirements of the programme and the availability of vacancies at the time of completing the NETP programme.
RN graduates employed outside the Waikato DHB are subject to the terms of their employer agreement.
