Primary Health Organisations in the Waikato

What is a Primary Healthcare Organisation (PHO)?

A PHO is a group of health providers whose job it is to look after all the people enrolled with them. A PHO is a team of doctors, nurses and other health professionals (such as Māori health workers and health promotion workers) that works with its community to give people a better primary health service.

How many PHOs are in the Waikato DHB?

There are four Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) in the Waikato DHB:
  • Waikato Primary Health
  • North Waikato PHO
  • Toi Ora PHO Coalition
  • Hauraki PHO

How much does it cost to visit a General Practitioner (GP)?

The cost of a GP visit is dependent on a number of factors:
  • Length of GP consultation
  • Individual Practice decision
  • Eligibility of the patient for the High User Health Card (HUHC)
Information is provided below on the fee that is charged to the patient.  Please note that these co-payments are applicable to a person who is enrolled with the GP practice, and are not applicable to out of hours or non-enrolled patients.  If you have any queries about the fees please discuss with your GP in the first instance or the PHO manager.  Waikato District Health Board queries regarding PHOs please contact Karina Elkington, Portfolio Manager, Planning and Funding, Waikato District Health Board elkingtk@waikatodhb.govt.nz
