Ex Waikato Hospital pharmacist sadly passes

On 16 April 2011 ex Waikato Hospital chief pharmacist Harry Jones sadly passed away surrounded by his family.

Harry was the chief pharmacist at Waikato Hospital from 1962 until his retirement in 1985.

Harry commenced his pharmacy apprenticeship at Napier Hospital in 1938 before registering in 1942. He then went on to work at Napier Hospital for six years followed by taking up the position of pharmacist-in-charge at the Memorial Hospital Hastings for 14 years. Harry then took on the role of chief pharmacist at Waikato Hospital.

Harry, together with his pharmacist wife Noelene, attended the inaugural meeting to form NZHPA (New Zealand Hospital Pharmacists' Association) on 26 July 1952 in Wellington. He was secretary/treasurer of NZHPA from 1955 to 1968, before joining the Executive from 1968 to 1975, during which time he served as president for three years.

Some of Harry's many achievements include:
  • fellowships of both the Pharmaceutical Society (1971) and the Hospital Pharmacists' Association (1979)
  • awarded the prestigious Wellcome Award (1980) in recognition of his distinguished service to the NZHPA
  • North Island non-proprietor member of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society from 1971 to 1979
  • hospital representative on the Pharmacy Education and Research Foundation Board from 1972 to 1980
  • 14 years service on the Pharmacy Advisory Committee at the Central Institute of Technology, Heretaunga
Harry was a well respected man, an entertaining story teller and an advocate for hospital pharmacy.

We are grateful for his considerable contribution to the development of the Pharmacy profession.
