Media advisory regarding hand hygiene practices among rowersWaikato District Health Board hand hygiene campaign manager Lin Marriott will be at Rowing New Zealand's high performance centre in Cambridge tomorrow from 9.30am to 11am at the request of Rowing NZ to provide hand hygiene training to 60 rowers participating in the world rowing championships. Infection control is a huge issue, particularly among sports people, and is an increasing societal problem resulting in increased admissions to hospitals. Rowing NZ is keen to ensure its rowers stay well before the world champs and identified that good hand hygiene practices can contribute to that. Waikato DHB is one of three hand hygiene New Zealand (HHNZ) pilot DHBs with a pilot now completed at Waikato Hospital. The campaign will roll out to our other hospitals. Our goal is that hand washing in hospitals should become as automatic as looking both ways before crossing the street. www.waikatodhb.govt.nz/page/pageid/2145839865/Infection_control Lin uses simple, clear messages so people know when and how to clean their hands properly. This recent article in Sunday Star Times gives an indication of the issues sports people face. www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/wellbeing/4026164/Dodging-gym-bugs-its-a-real-workout If you want to be present please contact Jan Taylor, Rowing NZ team manager on 0274 255 199 or Richard Gee, media and communications manager 07 823 4587 or 021 027 11926.
