Peta Karalus thanked for DHB contribution

Waikato DHB chair Graeme Milne today said he wanted to thank Peta Karalus for her remarkable tenure of service and contribution to the development of Waikato DHB over many years.

"I particularly want to thank her for her unstinting support for the health of Pacific island people in our region."

Samoan born Mrs Karalus was first appointed to the Waikato District Health board in 2000 to assist Health Waikato make the transition to being the provider arm of the board.

Mrs Karalus has served for a number of years on the Health Waikato Advisory Committee; during the last three years has been on the Community Public Health Committee and also chaired the Disability Support Advisory Committee where she showed wisdom and sensitivity in dealing with disability groups such as AgeWise and Disability Support Link.Graham Milne - Chairman

Mrs Karalus has a passion for Pacific Island health and her fellow Board members have always respected her knowledge, contribution and forthright views, especially around Pacific health.

Mrs Karalus is chief executive of Kaute Pasifika Services, an organisation established to meet the health and social needs of Pacific Island people living in Hamilton and the wider Waikato region.

She is a registered nurse with a Masters Degree in Health Policy and has also taught at Wintec.

She is married to Dr Noel Karalus and the couple have nine children. Mrs Karalus holds the chiefly title of Leaupepe from the village of Fasitoouta.
