Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance

Date: 14 August 2009

The Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance was called out to a head-on collision between a car and a minivan that occurred in the Karangahake Gorge at approximately 2:15 this morning.

The car, containing only the driver, was travelling towards Paeroa when it collided with the minivan, containing possibly up to 6 occupants. It is not known which vehicle was at fault. After the crash, all occupants of the minivan fled the scene. A preliminary inspection of the vehicle revealed that the ignition was been breached, so it is suspected that it may have been stolen.

Due to poor weather in the vicinity, the occupant of the car was transported by road to the Paeroa Domain, from which he was flown to Waikato Hospital with head and facial injuries and a fractured leg.
