Waikato Hospital patients condition update

The 14-year-old Christchurch boy brought to Waikato Hospital by Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance yesterday (see below) following a glider accident at Matamata is critically ill but stable in our intensive care unit.

His parents are with him.

The 77-year-old instructor from Taupo is progressing well in a ward.

At 4:30pm today the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance was dispatched to a Glider accident at Matamata aerodrome. An instructor pilot and his student were injured when there glider crash landed on the runway. The instructor in the rear seat appeared to suffer only minor injuries. The student pilot, a 14 year-old Christchurch teenager suffered multiple serious injuries. Matamata Fire rescue staff cut the nose of the glider away to free the student. He was stabilised at the scene by St John Paramedics before being flown to Waikato hospital.

We here at the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance have a policy of keeping the media informed of our work.
